Cypher (2002): The Smart Sci-Fi Thriller That Got Buried in the Bargain Bin

Cypher is a 2002 Vincenzo Natali film starring Jeremy Northam as a bored suburban accountant who takes a corporate espionage job and rapidly loses track of who he is, who he's working for, and what is real. It is a genuinely intelligent, cerebral science fiction thriller that ended up straight-to-DVD because distributors had no idea how to market a smart film starring people known for other things. Lucy Liu co-stars and is excellent. The film deserved a theatrical release. It didn't get one. That's the direct-to-video era in one sentence.
Why It's in the Book
Straight-to-DVD Delirium includes Cypher not because it's bad — it isn't — but because it represents the other side of the direct-to-video world. Among the Seagals and the creature features and the eighth instalments of forgotten franchises, occasionally something genuinely good landed there by accident. Cypher is that film. It belongs in the conversation about the best science fiction of the 2000s, not in the bargain bin where distribution decisions put it.
