Top of the Food Chain (1999): The Best 1950s Sci-Fi Parody Nobody Has Seen

By Johnny Rewind | Nostalgia Navigator

Top of the Food Chain is a 1999 Canadian sci-fi comedy about a small town being invaded by aliens who are drawn there by the town's spectacularly high rate of accidental death and general stupidity. A government scientist arrives to investigate. The film is a pitch-perfect parody of 1950s B-movie science fiction — the performances are calibrated exactly to the era being spoofed, the production design recreates the period aesthetic with loving detail, and the script is genuinely funny. It ended up direct-to-video because nobody knew how to market a Canadian 50s sci-fi parody in 1999. Their loss.

The Hidden Gem of the Book

Like Cypher, Top of the Food Chain is in Straight-to-DVD Delirium not because it's bad but because it's genuinely good and ended up in the wrong place. It deserved a cult theatrical run. It got a bargain bin instead. Find it. Watch it. It holds up completely.

Be kind. Rewind. They're not vegetarians anymore.
