Deadly Prey (1987): Rambo on a Budget of $7.50 and One Legendary Mullet

By Johnny Rewind | Nostalgia Navigator

Deadly Prey is a 1987 film in which a man is kidnapped from his front garden while taking out the trash wearing only shorts and no shoes, and proceeds to defeat an entire private mercenary army in the California wilderness using nothing but his own mullet and whatever sticks are lying around. It was directed by David A. Prior, who cast his brother Ted Prior in the lead role. Ted Prior spent the entire shoot without a shirt. It was the right call.

The Plot (Such As It Is)

A private military group abducts civilians to use as prey for training exercises. They kidnap Mike Danton, who turns out to be a former elite soldier. This is their mistake. Danton proceeds to dismantle the entire operation using guerrilla tactics, improvised weapons, and what can only be described as inhuman mullet energy. A villain is eventually defeated with his own severed arm. This happens.

Behind the Madness

David A. Prior made over 20 action films between 1984 and 2000, almost all starring his brother and shot in Alabama and California on minimal budgets. Deadly Prey cost roughly $100,000 and was shot in 12 days. A sequel, Deadliest Prey, was made in 2013 with the original cast, all of whom had aged considerably but none of whom had lost the energy. Ted Prior still didn't wear a shirt.

Be kind. Rewind. Don't kidnap the guy taking out the trash.
